Whats the differnece between bookkeeping and accounting?

I am thinking of going into something like that ,because I am good with numbers but when I ask people they tell me differnt things.I think accounting takes longer to get your certificate and all but im not sure?

The difference between accountants and bookkeepers is not always clear, particularly in smaller companies where bookkeepers also help interpret the accounting information. In large companies, the distinction is clearer this is because in a structured organization work is specialized. Bookkeepers focus on processing of accounting data. Accountants design the accounting information system and focus on analyzing and interpreting information.

A Book keeper maintains daily record of transactions.. with little accounting knowledge, he can do his job... simply he maintains day books..i.e. he prepares journal, ledger and trial balance.. in computerised accounting the function of book keeper is limited to recording of journal ..so most of book keepers job is automised now. There is little scope in this area to grow ...

The job of accountant starts where the book keeper's job ends.

An accountant analyses the accounting data for decision making purpose..he prepares financial reports for internal and external users and he interprets the reports for information and decision making purpose. we can get some analysis from the automatic reports generated by computers ..but computerised accounting system can't perform all the functions of an accountant..
