How do I become an accountant if I already have a BS in Education?

I am a recent college graduate and have my BS in Secondary Education - Citizenship. I am now taking classes at a local community college for accounting. If I stay there I can get my associates in Accounting.

What exactly do I have to do to become a CPA?

Should I just complete my associates degree in accounting or should I transfer out to another college and get my BS?

Also, what do I have to do after I graduate? What tests do I have to take and what process do I have to go through.

Any information would help a lot....I'm a bit lost and the staff at the community college aren't very helpful.

Thanks!

BTW, I don't know if this matters or not, but I am living in Pittsburgh, PA

The PA requirements are here: http://www.picpa.org/join/become_cpa/ind...

You'll need 24 credits in accounting and related subjects and to pass a pretty serious exam. A bachelor's or master's is required but the major isn't specified.

If I were you, I'd look into an MBA program with the flexibility to allow the 24 credits you'd need. Most MBA programs will come pretty close but you'll need a few more classes to be certain you not only qualify but also that you pass that exam.

I suggest an MBA because those programs don't usually require a business undergraduate major (but you'll need some leveling courses) and they include plenty of accounting, finance, and business law.

Doing it with an associates degree may cause you job finding problems later. And the level of the accounting classes probably won't meet your exam needs.

go and ask for a job in a bank at da counter

You will need to go to your state's website pertaining to CPA requirements. That's what I'm trying to do. I have a B.S. in Business. I'm working on an MBA so I can take 6 graduate courses in Accounting because that meets the requireements for the state I live in so I can take the CPA exam. In MA, you have to have a degree in accounting or a masters and 6 courses in accounting.
