Articling For A CA (Public Accounting) Firm In 3 Months: What Can I Do To Prepare???

Hello everyone,

At the end of August I will begin articling for one of the Big 4 accounting firms. Being that I have around 3 months until this happens, I would like to take some steps in order to be better prepared at doing my new job well.

With that being said, can anyone recommend ways in which I can prepare myself for my new job? I'm currently doing the following:

1. Updating my Excel skills.
2. Reviewing some notes from my advanced accounting courses.

I would very much appreciate any input given.

Congratulations... what an exciting opportunity! Your question and your activities indicate that you are motivated and care about the impression you will make... this will show in your work, which is good!

You might also want to read or listen to a current book on management philosophy and/or business relationships. The interpersonal skills (being able to develop rapport) is sometimes as important as knowledge and ability. Also brush up on your researching skills and if you can, become familiar with the libraries they use.

Other advice... be friendly and courteous, ask for help when you need it (don't waste hours on something that could be resolved with a simple question), but also work independently as much as possible (don't bother superiors unless you really need their help). It's a delicate balance... but important to master.

Good luck!
