Can anyone give me a pretty detailed account of the daily schedule at Navy Basic training? |
Can anyone give me a pretty detailed account of the daily schedule at Navy Basic training? It's been about 10 years for me and things change at Great Lakes almost daily so it's hard to tell you much. I can tell you that I got out about 5 years ago and am now a contractor for the navy in San Diego so I keep pretty good tabs on what's happening around the fleet. I doubt the following info has changed much in 10 years. Navy basic is about 9 weeks and is located in Great Lakes, Il. Depending on the time of year you go, (and because you are right next to Lake Michigan) it will either be bone chilling cold or hot and humid. Basic training is broken down into weeks and each day has a special designation. The first week you are there is refered to as "P" week (for processing.) Not much happens this week other than you get everything you need assigned to you and you get a physical from the top down. Everything from a dental checkup to several shots and basically another physical that was similar to the one you got for signing up. The best advice I can give you for this first week is that you will get very little sleep (be prepared to be out of the rack and dressed by 3:30am). Take it all in stride. This is easily the worst week of basic. It's all downhill from there. Next comes the actual training. The first day of the first week is refered to as 1-1 day and goes all the way through 7-7 day. Alot of what the navy does these days is highly technical work. Be prepared to spend a lot of time in a classroom. There's a physical aspect to it as but it's about an equal margin of PT/Drill and class time. When I went through it we had to take several tests to be able to pass on to the next week. You don't pass, you get sent to the next division behind you to repeat that particular section. Don't worry too much. As long as you study a little, you'll pass just fine. Throughout basic you will spend lots of time in the drill hall. We had M-16's assigned to us. It's my understanding that they don't do that anymore. At any rate, the main purpose of drilling is practice towards pass and review (at the end of bootcamp) and discipline and learing to work as a team. Toward the end you'll have to take the standard navy PRT (physical readiness test) to pass bootcamp. Depending on your age you'll have a certain amount pushups, situps and a mile and a half run to do. I know they've changed the standards but if you can do 75 pushups and 85 situps in 2 minutes each and run a mile and a half in about 13 minutes you should pass it with flying colors. This is also repeated throughout your naval career every six months (usually in april & october). For most folks (myself included), basic wasn't all that difficult. Listen to your RDC's (recruit division commanders), do what they tell you and you'll do just fine. Hope this helps... what are you scrared of, navy basic is for pussy's anyways. be a man and join the army, CHUMP! I found a detailed description of Air Force basic training at about.com, I'm sure they have the same thing for the Navy. My cousin is at basic training for the Navy right now, but I haven't heard anything from him, so I'm not much help, but about.com has good info about the military from people that have been through it. Don't know a detailed schedule, but basic is pretty much the same anywhere. Little sleep, a grueling schedule, and only will power will get you through. They've let up a bit , but it's going to be pretty much all work and no play. |
