I received a payroll-like check from an online company I applied to, but never offically worked for?

I had given them my full name, address, ss#, etc and today I recieved a check for $350.50 from the company. At first I had no idea what the company was so I googled it and then recalled I had applied. I called BoA where the check was from to see if it was a valid account and it was. I checked every site I could find for signs of a fake/real checks and it seems valid. I know I should call the company and clear up the situation, which I did but, someone named Tim/Tom picked up and there was no statement of the comapies name or anything so I got nervous and hung up. Should I go to my bank which is also, BoA and ask them for more validation or suck it up and call back the person/company and see what the check is actually for and risk losing the money if it is actually a valid check and I can walk away with some free money (I know that would obviously be the smarter thing to do)? I dont want to get in trouble for fraud or anything....

So overall should I contact the company who sent the check so they can explain why the check was sent or go to my bank and report it?

if its an error, its their error.

if you cash the check, you get free money, and the possiblility that they figure it out later in which case they might (slight chance) want it back.

if you dont cash the check, you get nothing.

call tim/tom back and talk to him. its the only way to know for sure.

Take it to the bank and see if they can contact the company.. If you keep the check knowing it's not yours then yes that is fraud... It would be nice to keep but really you can't.. Sorry I know I would love a check from someone for doing nothing..

Is this actually a loan that they expect to charge interest on? Or are they compensating you for the fact that they are all prepared to steal your identity, and all they need is the banking information that they will get when you cash the check?

I would check with the bank..but you really need to be careful with giving out your SS# to anyone/website especially if you dont know if the site is legit.....I would be extremely suspicious about this check..its best not to cash it..because they may be looking for u to pay back with alota interest..like a loan..but they got ur #ss so be checking if all is ok with your accounts in stuff..they may try n steal your identity

There ain't no such thing as free money. If they sent a genuine check to you by mistake, then you do not acquire title to the erroneous payment.
