It depends on your initial agreement.

If the deal was a certain price for a service rendered, than you are in the clear. If they haven't rendered the service, and you have paid, they owe you. This is usually only done for simple stuff, like a fixed-price will.

However, most big lawyer deals involve putting the lawyer on "retainer". What this means is that they are charging an hourly rate plus expenses, not a fixed price. Now, the expenses shouldn't be overhead, but it could be paralegal fees, stenogropher fees, filing fees, etc...

Your retainer is an estimate of how much it will cost, but it isn't a quote. If your job ends up taking more hours/expenses than estimated (which it almost always does), they will want you to cough up more money.

Note:
I have eliminated contingency lawyers from this because you stated that you are paying him, which means he isn't a contingency lawyer.

. Do NOT pay for any 'extras'.
Send the lawyer a check for the original amount with "PAID IN FULL" written on it.
They do NOT get paid any more unless they do work for YOU, not for their overhead !!
